ahhh muzzle training dogs. it (unfortunately) gets people all weirded out “is that dog aggressive??” “will it bite me??”
“i don’t want my dog wearing a muzzle, what if people think he’s aggressive??” etc. are all common thought processes among people
whos only experience with muzzles is a very base level. i think all dogs should be muzzle trained, personally :)
my dog is muzzle trained because she may need it for vet visits. we’re working with her vet for other solutions too, to
make vet visits less scary for her, but she has her muzzle and she likes wearing it because she knows she gets treats
from it. she wears it for other reasons too, occasionally — she can be reactive (it’s genetically built into her breed makeup), it helps with introducing her to other animals, etc. it also means people are more likely to leave us alone —
she doesn’t like small children, or pushy adults, reaching towards her suddenly/unexpectedly, and people don’t always
listen to verbal “no you can’t pet her” sigh
look at her in her cute muzzle :) we got it from big snoof dog gear — my
personal preference is wire muzzles in terms of the look. there’s several other shops with different styles depending
on your preference mia’s muzzles, muzzle movement,
and trust your dog.

to start with muzzle training — i use lots of treats. lizzie, my dog, went through the steps super fast – she’s not a particularly gear-shy dog, so we were able to progress from “get a treat for interacting with the muzzle at all” to “get a treat for putting your face in the muzzle” to “get a treat for holding your face in the muzzle while i mess with the straps” to “the straps are clipped shut – now lets do other things while wearing them muzzle”. your mileage may vary depending on your dog’s comfort with new gear and previous experience with muzzles.
lizzie’s favorite game is what i like to call “”muzzle tag”” – where i hold the muzzle in front of her and as she puts her face in it for treats i back up, forcing her to follow me to get more food :) very easy way to condition a very positive response to them muzzle coming out! we play this game both at home and when we’re at the vet for our every-other-week happy vists.

good luck & have fun if you decide to try muzzle training with your own dog! :) it’s a very good skill for any and all dogs to have — for vet visits, grooming, dogs who might bite, dogs who like eating things they shouldn’t, etc. i frequent r/muzzledogs — and that’s a great place to go for advice or to check the fit of your dogs muzzle or to just show off your muzzle wins!
